The AFL reportedly investigated the Gold Coast Suns' hiring of Alexandra Crow, the partner of head coach Damien Hardwick, to assess compliance with the league’s soft cap regulations.
After reviewing the circumstances, the AFL found no breaches of the rules.
The investigation raised broader discussions about the soft cap’s role in club operations and financial fairness.
What Even is the Soft Cap?
The soft cap is a financial limit imposed on spending in a club’s football department. It applies to:
Coaching and support staff salaries;
Medical and high-performance teams; and
Recruitment and player development programs.
Why does it exist?
Prevents wealthier clubs from outspending others;
Ensures competitive balance across the league; and
Promotes financial sustainability for all teams.
What Are The Cap Values?
The AFL has announced gradual increases to the football department soft cap:
2025 - $7.675 million;
2026 - $7.925 million; and
2027 - $8.175 million.
To help clubs attract and retain top coaches, the AFL introduced a soft cap concession of 20% for senior coaches. This means 20% of the head coach’s salary is effectively deducted, reducing its impact on a club’s football department spending. Other deductions are available for various other expenses.
