Drive to Survive. Oscar Piastri and McLaren’s rapid rise to the top. Liam Lawson’s brutal demotion from Red Bull. Everyone is talking about Formula One right now and for good reason - it’s fast, exciting and adrenaline-fuelled.
But behind the scenes, motorsport operates under an extremely complex governance structure, from the FIA at the international level to Motorsport Australia and delegated bodies managing karting, drag racing, and speedway.
Global Motorsport Governance: The Role of the FIA and F1
Motorsport is governed by a structured hierarchy, with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) at the top. The FIA is responsible for setting and enforcing regulations, maintaining world records, and organising FIA International Championships. It also serves as the final international court of appeal for disputes in motorsport.
At the pinnacle of international motorsport is Formula One (F1), the world’s most prestigious racing series. F1 operates under FIA regulations, with the FIA responsible for setting safety standards, technical rules, and overseeing compliance at every Grand Prix.
National Authority: How Motorsport Australia Enforces the Code
Each country has a club or federation (ASN) that governs motorsport activities within its jurisdiction. In Australia, this role is held by Motorsport Australia, which has been delegated sporting power by the FIA. Motorsport Australia is responsible for regulating motorsport activities across the country, ensuring adherence to international standards and overseeing various competitions.
Delegated Powers: Governing Bodies for Karting, Drag Racing, and Speedway
Motorsport Australia also delegates authority for certain disciplines to recognised governing bodies through an annual renewal process. These delegations require FIA approval, with all activities conducted under conditions approved by Motorsport Australia and reported to the FIA. The key delegated bodies include:
Karting — Governed by Karting Australia, which manages grassroots kart racing and supports driver development;
Drag Racing — Governed by the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA), overseeing drag racing events nationwide; and
Speedway — Governed by Speedway Australia, responsible for dirt track racing and related categories.
This governance structure ensures that motorsport, from grassroots karting to the elite world of F1, operates under consistent rules and safety standards, maintaining integrity and fairness across all levels.
