Lloyd Perrett, who played as a prop for the Manly Sea Eagles, has filed a legal claim against his former club, alleging that a brutal pre-season training session in 2017 caused permanent injuries. That session, conducted in very warm conditions, is said to have included three consecutive 2 km time trials with no water or fluid breaks and culminated in Perrett collapsing mid-run and being hospitalised in a comatose state.

Legal Issues in Focus

  • The claim seeks multi-million dollar damages for lost career income.

  • It highlights the evolving standard of care that clubs and governing bodies must meet in player welfare.

  • The central allegation is that training practices exposed a player to unnecessary and foreseeable risk.

Broader Implications

This case is significant for professional sport in Australia. It underlines how quickly legal expectations shift when it comes to player safety and welfare. It also raises broader governance questions, particularly in light of other incidents involving heat stress and training practices at Manly.
